Hi there smart drivers, Rick with Smart Drive Test.

Quick tip for winter driving smart: yes it's the first snowfall of the winter time here in the Okanagan Valley and many people have not yet adjusted to driving in the winter because we haven't had snow yet.

So this is the first snowfall!

As well, unfortunately because we like to procrastinate a bit, most people haven't put the winter tires on the vehicle either.

So know that and keep that in mind.

So what do you need to do - you need to slow down - you need to increase your following distance and keep a good buffer space between you and other vehicles in front of you.

And as well, because it's only -1°C (30°F)--the temperatures around freezing--it's going to be more slippery.

And it's going to be more slippery as you get farther and farther off the main road.

So know that.

And as well, separate use of the primary controls - don't try to steer and brake at the same time, because it won't work.

You need to have braking first - brake well in advance of where you want to stop and then creep up to where you actually want to stop.

Many driver slide into the ditch during the first snowfall of the year owing to it being slippery. Roads are more treacherous in the winter when the temperature is around freezing (0°C or 32°F).

If you're going to turn a corner, brake first - slow right down and then turn.

So it has to be separate use of the primary controls when you're turning or coming up to a stop.

So today, slow down, keep good space and know that it's going to be slippery the farther you get away from the main roads.
