How To Prevent A Crash When Turning Onto A Major Road

Now turning from a minor road to a major road when you're waiting at the controlled intersection.

Because it's going to be a controlled intersection for you and not for the cross traffic.

If there's a vehicle turning on to the roadway onto which you're on, do not turn out until that vehicle commits to the turn.

Before pulling out, be sure that the other driver has committed to the turn by slowing and beginning to move the vehicle around the corner. Never trust another's turn signal.

Never Trust Another Drivers' Turn Signal

If you pull out because the driver has signaled and indicated that they're going to turn you risk being involved in a crash.

Because the driver may have forgotten to cancel his or her signal.

She may have changed her mind that she's going to go to the grocery store and go straight through.

So you risk being involved in the crash if you proceed before the other vehicle commits.

Pull Out in Front, Only After the Other Driver Commits

So do not pull out until that vehicle actually slows, commits to the turn and is actually beginning to come around the corner.

This is basic defensive posturing for you when you're pulling from a minor road out on to a major road.

A driver waits for the turning vehicle to commit to the right-hand turn before pulling out onto the major road.
