Delineators or Pylons

Now, you're going to need five of these pylons behind me here.

The one-meter tall, 36-inch tall delineators, you can get those from any equipment rental shop.

They're only about 10 bucks for the day.

You're going to need five of them, as I said.

Now, this exercise is going to teach you use of the mirrors.

It's going to teach you how to keep track of the steering wheel.

And it's going to teach you where your vehicle is in space and place.

And I'm going to give you step-by-step instructions.

Challenging Exericse

Now, there's some other videos here, on YouTube and I'm going to warn you about that, that they tell you that this is straight forward.

This is not straight forward, you're going to have to practice this.

And I'm telling you right now, it's going to improve your overall driving and make you a better driver.

And make you better prepared for your road test.

Be a Better, Smarter Driver Overall

So do this exercise wherever you are in the world, do this exercise when you're learning how to drive.

And it'll make you a better driver overall.

And more competent for your road test.

And give you a higher level of confidence.

Placement of Cones

The pylons are set up so the first two are 20 feet apart.

And the nose cone is out another 20 feet and they're nine feet wide.

And I'll make a diagram for you and put that up for you.

And you might have to make a few adjustments for your own vehicle but these will work for a small sedan.

What are the measurements for the maneuverability test in Ohio?In the diagram above, you can see that the box is 20' feet by 9' feet, and the nose cone is 20' feet from the rectangle in the cener.

Like if you're driving a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic or something like that.

These step-by-step instructions will work but you may have to change it a little bit to get it to work for you specifically.

So, let's get in the car and get going here and show you how to do this.

In the Car - Going Forward

Hi there, Smart Drivers in the car, got all the cameras hooked up.

Got all the cameras turned on this time as opposed to the last time.

So we're going to get this going here for you and show you how to do this Ohio Maneuverability Test.

Basically, you want to get lined up, first of all.

And we simply drive forward in the box.

Until the mirrors are lined up with the front pylon.

And we're going to go left here.

So we turn one revolution to the left.

Okay, just as that front pylon comes past the front of the car, turn all the way back the other way.

Okay? See as it comes to the back of the door, straighten your steering wheel back out. Backing through the pylons for the Ohio maneuverability test. A great exercise to learn how to drive.Backing through the pylons for the Ohio maneuverability test. You must go backward without stopping.

Reversing

All right, in to reverse.

We're going to back up, until the pylon is at the back of the door.

So it's at the back of the door now, we're going to turn it all the way to the right on the steering wheel, until the pylon is just about a foot past the vehicle at the back there.

We straighten our steering wheel out.

We back up until the pylon is at the back wheel of the vehicle.

Once it's at the back wheel, we turn all the way to the left.

And I stalled it (laughs).

Okay, now we straighten the steering wheel back out and we back straight up.

Okay, nice and slow past the pylons here.

Learning to Use the Mirrors

When we're at the mirrors we can see we're very close on the left here, but we're fairly far from the right.

So we're okay here and we just back up nice and easy, looking around and checking.

A little bit of adjustment here just to make sure that we get past the pylons okay.

Driving left of the nose cone on the Ohio Maneuverability Test to pass the road test and learn to drive.Driving left of the nose cone on the Ohio Maneuverability Test to pass the road test and learn to drive.

And make sure you go nice and slow past the pylons here because you don't want to strike them with your mirrors.

Because that's a fail on your test.

So, [COUGHS] excuse me.

Okay, and back.

And we jut get lined up here again.

And we're going to go to the other side and same principle.

Up so we're in line with the mirrors at the front.

Right there.

Mirror, you can signal if you want but you don't have to.

One revolution to the right.

Okay, this pylon comes just past the front of the vehicle.

And revolution to the other.

And we straighten out the wheel.

360° Degree Scan Before Backing

Okay, backing up.

Checking, 360° degree scan.

Back straight up until the mirror, sorry, went too far.

(laughs) Okay, back up until the pylon's at the back of the door.

All the way to the left.

Backing up for the Ohio Maneuverability Test.Stay tight to the driver's side of the car to pass the Ohio Maneuverability Test.

Okay, back pylon is about a foot off the back.

Straighten out the steering wheel.

And you go back until it's at the back wheel of the vehicle.

All the way to the right.

And we're straight now.

Both pylons are lined up in the mirror.

Bring the steering wheel back to straight.

Adjust a little bit.

Making sure that you're between the pylons looking around.

A little bit closer on this one, on this side.

Nice and slow past the pylon here.

If you strike the cone on the test, it's an automatic fail

Especially, when it goes past the mirror because you don't want to get hooked up on the mirror.

Because that's going to be a fail on your test, okay? And just like that and we're past.

Okay, so one more time.

Okay, more moving forward.

Driving straight into the box.

Lined up with the mirror.

One revolution to the left.

Okay, this pylon's come right past the front.

One revolution back.

And we're straight, we're past the pylon, the pylon's right at the back door.

Straighten out the vehicle, okay? Backing up.

Pylon's in line with the back of the door.

All the way to the right.

Okay, this pylon's about a foot away from the back of the vehicle.

Straighten out the wheel.

Pylon's at the back tire.

All the way to the left.

Stalled the vehicle again.

Okay, we're straight.

Steering wheel back to straight.

Okay, nice and slow past the pylon on the mirror.

Mirrors are the Widest Part of Vehicle

The mirror's your farthest point sticking out so we always want to be careful.

Nice and easy, 360° degree scan.

Nice and slow past the pylon at the back here.

Reversing for the Ohio Maneuverability Test to pass the test.If you strike a pylon during the test, it's like that you won't pass.

We're between the pylons and we're done.

Okay, going to the other side.

Straight.

Up.

Until the mirror's lined up on that side with the mirror.

Okay, one revolution to the right.

This mirror's just past the front of the vehicle.

One revolution this way.

And straighten the vehicle out.

Okay, backing up.

Pylon's in line with the back of the door.

All the way to the left.

Okay, we're approximately one foot off that back pylon.

Straighten out the wheel.

That pylon's at the back tire.

All the way to the right.

Until we're straight.

That pylon's in the center of the hood in front.

Okay, bring the steering wheel back to straight.

One and a half turns.

And we back straight up nice and slow.

Backing up.

All the way back, nice and slow going past the pylons.

Because remember our mirrors are sticking out the farthest.

And we're ready, right there.

And that's how you do it.
