How to Do A 2-Point Reverse Turn OR Backing Around a Corner

Introduction
Hi there smart drivers, Rick with Smart Drive Test talking to you today about how to do a 2-Point Reverse Turn for the purposes of a road test.
Now if you've been practicing your other slows manoeuvres in the parking lot, and doing your three-point turns, 'U' turns, parallel parking, and those types of slow-speed maneuvers, and you're comfortable with the primary controls this manoeuvre is a lot easier than the other ones.
So we're just going to give you this straightforward technique of being able to do this.
It's basically speed and space management and good communication and observation as you do with all of the other maneuvers.
Now if an examiner does get you to do this, most of the time they're going to get to do it on a dead-end street, they're going to do it at a T-intersection and quiet suburban areas.
They are not going to get you to do it somewhere where it's busy.
There's going to be very little traffic and you're going to be able to do it quite simply.
And essentially all you do is back into a laneway or back around the corner and a roadway and go in the opposite direction.
So today we're going to show you how to do that.
Simple, straight forward step-by-step instructions to be able to complete a two-point reverse turn as one of the required maneuvers for the purposes of a driver's test.

First 2-Point Reverse Turn
Put a piece of tape on the top of the steering wheel to keep track of where your steer tires are at a glance.
So the examiner has indicated that we're going to do a two-point reverse turn here.
Mirror, signal, shoulder check.
Nobody there.
We pull up until we can see the back through the back corner...the corner that we're going to back around.
360° degree scan.
We have our right signal on.
We have the transmission in reverse.
360° scan again.
Pause and we turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and follow the corner around.
When the vehicle is straight, straighten the steering wheel out.
Signal left.
360° scan.
Nobody behind us and we proceed.
Scanning the intersection and proceeding.
The examiner has told us to do a two-point reverse turn here at the corner.
Mirror, signal, shoulder check and signal to the right and pull over to the right.
And essentially we want to pull up so we can see the corner through the back window.
It is very similar to setting up for the purposes of parallel parking.
You want to be about three feet away from the curb and you want to be able to see the corner through the back window here.
Put your right signal on, 360° degree scan.
The vehicle's transmission is in reverse so your reverse lights are on and people know what you're doing.
You simply turn your steering wheel and follow the corner around on that side.
And you're looking over your right shoulder.
And you simply pull back until the front of the vehicle is at the corner of the intersection.
Wheels straight.
And we're gonna go that way.
360° degree scan.
Signal on, into a forward gear and we turn and we drive.
That's how you do a two-point reverse turn for the purposes of a road test.
Second 2-Point Reverse Turn
The examiners indicated that we're going to do a two-point reverse turn in the laneway here.
Mirror, signal, shoulder check, and pull up.
360° scan.
Pull up approximately three feet away from the curb so the corner is in the back window of your vehicle.
Put the transmission into reverse.
Right signal on...
360° degree scan...
Nobody coming.
Turn all the way to the right and back around the corner until the vehicle is straight.
Look forward to know that the vehicle is straight.
Straighten the steering wheel out.
Signal to the left, 360° degree scan, and we proceed.
Conclusion
Quick review of two-point reverse turn.
If you've been practicing your other slow-speed manoeuvres, this one is going to be fairly straightforward.
And a lot easier than parallel parking for certain.
Now first thing you do when the examiner indicates that you're going to do a two-point reverse turn is mirror, signal, shoulder check.
Pull over to the side of the road.
So you're going to signal to the right and you're going to do a shoulder check to the right and make sure that you check your mirrors that it's safe to stop.
And you're going to simply, pull over past where you're going back around the corner and stop on the side of the road.
After you come to a complete stop, put the vehicle in reverse so other vehicles know that you're going to reverse around the corner.
Because you already have your right signal on so they know what you're going to be doing.
After you come to a stop, 360° degree scan, make sure there aren't any other road users or vehicle that are going to impede your movement.
And again the basic components of the road test are speed and space management, communication and observation.
So make sure you observe well before you start to back around the corner.
You're simply going to turn the steering wheel all the way to the right, navigate around the corner in reverse.
When you get the vehicle all the way around the corner you're going to bring the steer tires back to straight.
Steering Wheel Position
And as I said before, steering wheels on passenger vehicles move one-and-a-half to two turns all the way left and all the way right.
Most of the time it's one and a half, but just as you started with your slow-speed maneuvers in the parking lot there, just check that to make sure that it is one-and-a-half so when you bring it back one-and-a-half it's going to be straight when the logo on the steering wheel is in the upright position.
So bring your steering wheel back to straight, put your left signal on, 360° degree scan, into a forward gear and you can drive forward and around to the left and bring the vehicle in the opposite direction.
It's called the two-point reverse turn.
You're simply backing around the corner and going in the opposite direction.
As I said in the introduction, most of the time you're going to do this in a quiet suburban area at a "T" intersection or on a dead-end road.
There isn't gonna be much traffic around for you to be able to do this.
It is one of the maneuvers that you could potentially be asked to do on a road test.
You need to know how to do that.
